Models Direct believes that the modelling industry can and should embrace beauty in every size, and being a plus-size is beautiful. It’s making a bold and positive stand and we’ll look at it in this blog.

The narrative has changed and it’s all about the beauty of diversity where the modelling industry is celebrating every day people of all shapes and sizes. Breaking into the industry as a plus-size model is no longer an impossible quest. It’s now a reality for those who identify as male, female and beyond, and it’s shining a spotlight on how body standards are progressing for all genders.
We’re part of breaking down these barriers and making beauty something to celebrate rather than turning down someone if they don’t fit in the box. After all, our agency has been in the industry for over thirty years and the plus size body shape is one we’ve been proud to represent and encourage a healthy attitude to all body shapes and sizes.
More recently, with trailblazers who have been part of the plus-size movement such as Ashley Graham, Paloma Elsesser and Kate Wasley (making it into the top 10 curve sensations), we also know how influential social media can be and how it’s helped pivot this refreshing outlook on diverse beautiful body sizes.

1. Build a winning portfolio
Having a portfolio to showcase who you are will build a story for you to tell. It’s yours to own, your way and on your terms. If you’re registered with our modelling agency, Models Direct, we support you along your journey as a model. We’ll pop in gentle reminders on effective ways to keep your portfolio up to date with seasonal suggestions. You can take a look at some here.

It’s up to you though whether you’d like to take it on board, but it’s there for you if ever you’ve forgotten to upload recent images or you need new ideas on how to keep it fresh.
2. Network with others in the plus-size industry
If you’re social, you can connect with other models following the same path. You can also keep an eye out for modelling events on a regional or national scale which is handy for networking, and follow other industry professionals such as photographers and directors who are focusing on the plus-size sector. Being active will help you get out there, meet new people and surround yourself with professionals with the same vision.
3. Don’t give up!

Our advice would be to keep going! Modelling is competitive but so are most other things you come across in life. Just don’t give up! There might be times when you feel like things aren’t moving forward or fast enough, but give it time. Stay positive, stay true to yourself and if you’re registered with our agency, you can always connect with our team to find out how your application and portfolio are doing in the eyes of new clients.
