Times do change and so do looks. No one can look as young as they did thirty or so years ago, but that’s no reason to think a change in looks over time isn’t needed for commercial modelling. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mature models have been in high demand for decades, and their popularity with the brands we work with is increasing.
A lot of our modelling jobs call for models with character. Sure, our clients consider a model’s looks, but they’re also yearning for enthusiasm and a zest for life. If life really does start at 40, that means that older models should have the energy to rock their attributes when the camera starts rolling. Age isn’t a barrier, it’s no disadvantage. The importance of mature models is reflected in the number of brands searching for their perfect candidates for their marketing campaigns. These campaigns could effective photoshoots with a professional photographer, or they could be a short film for a company’s website / social media pages, or eye-catching images for printed media – whatever form the job takes, one thing is consistent: brands need mature models.
According to the 2021 records at the Office for National Statistics (in our opinion the most accurate source for UK facts & figures), the population of England and Wales has continued to age since 2011. The number of people aged 65 years and over increased from 9.2 million in 2011 to over 11 million in 2021 and the proportion of people aged 65 years and over rose from 16.4% to 18.6%.
What can we take from these figures? The ratio of people living longer in the UK is increasing, and that can only be reassuring news. With more technology and more opportunities for older people, it stands to reason that there are more products and services for the mature crowd.

Being silver and stylish can be a massive bonus for some of our jobs. Commercial fashion modelling calls for elegance and sophistication when posing for clothes brands, but there are plenty of opportunities for mature models to use composure and experience. For example, healthcare and insurance companies often require mature models to help them make promotional material appealing to millions of customers. Looks can be important, but our clients are more impressed with a model’s assurance and the ability to follow instructions on set. Life experience cannot be underestimated.

Speaking of experience, thousands of Models Direct talent have tasted success without previous modelling acumen. We look for everyday people with the determination and confidence to make our client’s photo / film shoots go with a bang, so we don’t alienate anybody by asking for modelling experience. Commercial modelling really is an open invitation for people of all ages, backgrounds, genders and characteristics.
Maturity means respect. It means confidence. And it means in demand.
