Confidence is usually built on experience. Some people can be naturally confident, but most of us gain assurance by trying new things, confronting fears or engaging with the unknown.
Modelling can – and does – grow confidence. Unlike many other jobs (either part-time or as a career), modelling often involves human interaction and posing in front of a camera or film team. Anyone on set can suspect nerves and, although some nerves are to be expected, models must learn to stay calm and trust their abilities. Models must even display confidence for a regular photoshoot consisting of just a few head shots; they must rely on their talents and their skills to follow directions from whoever is leading the shoot. To say that a model simply shows up and stands still until the photographer has finished their task is naïve.
Younger models develop mentally and physically at a higher rate, and their limited experience may, in some cases, mean a daring outlook to life. Older models develop, too, and some need to rebuild confidence due to past experiences.

If you already have a wealth of life experience, what are the best ways to (re)build some self-esteem when embarking on modelling jobs? We have the answers – some could be just what you’re looking for, whilst others might not work. Like we say, we’re all different.

Be comfortable with your looks and your life. If you’re happy with how you live as an adult, why should you care what other people think? Peer pressure can strike at any time, and it’s more evident during the teenage / young adult years. If you’re plus 30 years of age, your lifestyle isn’t important to us as your desire to be a model.
We celebrate diversity in all forms. Age is no barrier to modelling; in fact, many modelling assignments specifically call for more for older talent. Take pride in your past experiences, and don’t believe your age is an obstacle to modelling. It’s not.

Remind yourself of your best qualities. You might be successful at work; you could have a fantastic group of friends; perhaps people confide in you. These are all admirable characteristics, and you should always concentrate on your strengths ahead of any modelling assignments.

Learn to self-praise. You’re not conceited by recognising the things you’re particularly good at. Some of your skills could well be used in various Models Direct modelling jobs, so please tell us what you might offer our clients.
Keep challenging yourself. This could come in the form of trying new experiences, travelling more, taking up a new sport or other hobby, or just reading outside your usual genres.
By joining reputable modelling agencies like us, older individuals can regain some lost confidence. Yes, it will be uncharted territory and, yes, it might even be daunting, but if you’re of a particular age and already considering modelling, then modelling could be that spark you’ve been longing for.
